Personal Protective Equipment
References: R Record keeping requirement | E An engineering/certification requirement | P A permit to work requirement | S A safe work method statement (SWMS) / written plan
Potential hazards include, but are not limited to:
Personal protective equipment (PPE) means clothing, equipment or substances, which when worn or applied correctly, reduces the risk of injury or harm to all or part of the wearers the body.
PPE is the least reliable defence in the hierarchy of hazard control and is the lowest form of protection against personal injury/harm. PPE should be used in conjunction with other hierarchical hazard controls (engineering, substitution, elimination etc.). PPE must only be used in isolation where no other means of hazard control are practicable.
The minimum PPE required to be worn in all construction areas on MPX projects is:
Task-specific PPE must be worn as described in SWMS, this includes but is not limited to gloves, eye/face protection, hearing protection and respiratory protection.
PPE must be worn in accordance with site rules, regulatory requirements, SWMS, safety data sheets, project signage, manufacturer’s recommendations and applicable Australian Standards.
MPX / subcontractors / consultants are responsible for supplying their own personnel with PPE.
MPX / subcontractors / consultants are responsible for informing their personnel in the use, selection, maintenance and disposal of PPE.
PPE must comply with the relevant Australian Standard. (refer to table.1)
PPE must be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. The user of the PPE is responsible for maintaining the PPE.
MPX / subcontractors / consultants must maintain adequate supplies of PPE on the project for their personnel. PPE is to be replaced on a fair wear and tear basis.
Signage must be displayed at project / construction area entrances and in designated areas and where task-specific PPE is mandatory.
PPE includes UV protection such as sunscreen, hard hat brims/neck flaps, refer:
