References:  R Record keeping requirement | E An engineering/certification requirement | P A permit to work requirement | S A safe work method statement (SWMS) / written plan

Operational

Earthmoving equipment when used to perform work configured as a crane: must be in accordance with AS 1418.8: Cranes, Hoists and Winches – Part 8: Special Purpose Appliances.

Tracked excavators are permitted to be configured and used as a crane on MPX sites.

Non-tracked earthmoving equipment (e.g. front end loaders, skid steer loaders, excavators on wheels) are not permitted to be configured / used as a crane on MPX sites.

R People carrying out work with earthmoving equipment configured as a crane must be inducted into applicable SWMS and hold valid records of training/competency, evidence must be retained on site refer to:

Where earthmoving equipment is configured and used as a crane:

  • S Task-specific SWMS is required
  • Safe Working Load (SWL) must be displayed in a prominent location on the machine
  • Load chart must be displayed in the machine cab
  • Anti-burst protection valves must be fitted to the machine (if >1T SWL capacity). These are designed to prevent boom collapse in the event of sudden loss of hydraulic fluid pressure.
  • Rated lifting equipment must be used, inspected and maintained
  • Dogmen must sling and direct the load
  • Only the attachments identified in the load chart to be used

R Equipment maintenance and inspection records must be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and:

Earthmoving Plant - Lifting Points

Loads are only be suspended from the manufacturer’s designated lift point on the boom or the quick hitch if fitted.

A lifting point should form a closed eye and be arranged so accidental unhooking of the load cannot occur or the sling cannot become detached from the lifting point or load, and such that slings will hang clear of the boom and/or boom attachment.

Legal and Other Requirements

  • AS 1418.8: Cranes, Hoists and Winches – Part 8: Special purpose appliances
  • AS 4772: Earth-moving machinery – Quickhitches for excavators and backhoe loaders
